âI took an Uber here,â I told Mick when we stepped outside the bar, my heart stampeding in my chest. It wasnât nerves or fear of getting caught or hurt. It was anticipation of being held, of being cared for in a way I never had before.
âYou okay to ride over with me?â he asked, handing his slip to the valet. Of course, his SUV was directly out front, and it only took a few seconds for them to whip it around.
I simply nodded, and then Mick opened the passenger door for me.
The sky was a midnight blue with stars twinkling in the distance. A breeze brushed by me as the door closed, and a chill ran down my spine.
âReady?â Mick raised an eyebrow, turning to face me as he got settled in the driverâs seat.
âReady,â I said firmly.
The foreign car purred as it rolled out of the driveway and onto the street.
âDo you mind if I open the window?â I asked.
âYou donât have to ask shit like that, Margo.â
Cracking the window, I inhaled some much-needed fresh air and closed my eyes, thinking this was normal. And it could be, if I werenât married to someone else.
âNot for long. You need to break free,â Mick said, bringing me back from what I thought were my private thoughts.
âDid I say that aloud?â
He nodded and made a sharp turn into his building. Entering from the garage, we went up the elevator, his hands on my waist and his mouth on mine as soon as the doors shut.
âI know itâs wrong, but it feels so right,â I mumbled.
âThis isnât you, Mar, to lie or be untrue,â he said, holding my hand, shortening my name even further.
I shook my head as the doors opened and we made our way into his penthouse.
âMaybe we can make it beyond the door this time,â he teased, leading me toward the sofa. âSit. Water? Wine?â
âWater,â I said, my throat dry with anticipation.
âSparkling? Still?â
âSparkling,â I said as he moved toward the open kitchen. âI take it you donât go to the grocery store yourself?â
He laughed at my accusation, raising his hands in the universal sign for surrender. âCaught. My housekeeperâs name is Rochelle, and sheâs a queen. Shops, orders supplies from the âZon, waits for handymen, cleans, keeps me in line. Only thing she doesnât do is cook.â
He returned to me with Pellegrino in a water goblet.
Handing me the glass, he said, âI know it makes me look terribly spoiled, but Iâd rather work than mess with all that shit. I can do it all. Believe me, I did my time when I was growing up. There wasnât a thing I didnât help my mom with. And Rochelle is well compensated, including benefits for her and her son. Sheâs a single mom.â
âYou donât need to defend yourself to me.â I sipped my water rather than tell him I couldnât stop admiring his past passion for protecting his mom, and the way he was a white knight when it came to anyone else he met.
